Hearing Test with and without the FM System
Today Evan had another hearing test in the booth but it was a completely different one than we have ever experienced. He got the HINT (Hearing In Noise Test) test done. I have been wanting to show the school the benefits he gets from having a Personal FM System and this is the way we were able to do it. What they do is a recorded voice says sentences and he has to repeat what he hears word for word. The first test was done with just his hearing aids in the quiet booth and he scored 89 words out of 104 which is an 86% and the sentence level was at 60db (not to shabby).. The next test was just his hearing aids with noise and the noise level is at 50db while the sentence level was at60db and he only scored 14 words out of 106 which is 13%, that one was even difficult for me to hear plus hard for Evan to keep turning around and saying "I can't hear it", poor boy just kept looking at me like he did something wrong. So we just kept telling him he was doing a good job and it would get much easier on the next test. The last test was done with his hearing aids and his Inspiro FM System. There really isn't anyway for the audiologist to have the recorded voice do the talking with the FM so she did it and the noise level was still at 50db. Are you ready??? He scored 94 words out of 105 which is an 89%!!! If that isn't proof that having an Personal FM is a great assist to our child with hearing loss, I don't know what is... He was extremely exhausted when he got done but I was so proud of him. This is really good data and I can't wait to do it again at the end of the school year!!!!

That is a great test! Nolan's too young for it, but I would be interested to see how he does in sound with just his aids. In busy restaurants, he can't seem to hear us at all. He does great in quiet, but that kind of test does show the school district how much difficulty background noise causes. Thank goodness for FM systems!

FM systems are a blessing. At the same time we need to understand the continued impact of adverse classroom listening conditions and advocate for appropriate acoustics.
