I am married to Bret for 10 years. We have 2 boys, Robbie is 13 and Evan is 6. We live outside the city limits in the middle of a cornfield and have 1 dog and 2 cats. This blog is about our family but mainly about our journey on teaching Evan spoken language since he was diagnosed with a permanent hearing loss at the age of 3 months.
I had Evan's parent/teacher meeting last week and one of the things she encouraged me to have him do was write all the time. She stated that his handwriting is pretty good already for his age but I needed to make sure that it had meaning for him. So I made him make our grocery list and I said the words and he had to write them down how he heard them. I did tell him how to spell salad and cheese b/c I knew he would have no clue. It is so amazing to me to see this kiddo that fought so hard to just live at birth now in kindergarten and being successful...
Evan came home from school today and this is his drawing of his dad playing hockey. Notice the pads he made sure he had with his uniform. He plays for the "Tigrs" (tigers)..
And this picture is of his brother Robbie being a rockstar. The black thing hanging down is his guitar. The name at the top is suppose to be Robbie..
I just love that he is spelling things even if they are wrong.. He is close both times!!
I told Cindy Lawrence, the Outreach Director, that I would post this on my blog to help advertise it. By doing so does not imply any association with this organization. Cindy sits on the Board for our Hands & Voices chapter, as I do, and that is how I got this information.

My little guy is sick today. It started Saturday morning with just a minor cough and me thinking it is probably just his allergies acting up. So we started breathing treatments and made sure he took his allergy medicine and asthma medicine religiously. We spent the day in Fort Wayne and he was fine, no fever just a little coughing. Well all night Saturday night his cough got a little worse and then by Sunday morning his cough was still dry but starting to get worse. But still no fever. We continued breathing treatments and the medicines and I stayed home from church with him to make sure things continued this way and all seems good to go. By 5:00 p.m. I was sure it was allergies and then all of sudden I noticed he started to blush and his voice was getting a little horse and I said it was time to take his temperature. Yep u guessed it.. Temp of 99.4 which meant daddy got to stay home with him so I could go to Bible study. By 7:30 p.m. it was 100.4 so that meant he got to stay home from school on Monday.
Fast forward to Monday morning, no fever so far but some major congestion going on so a doctor's visit is in order. I started to check his temp at 10:00 a.m. this morning and proceeded to tell him he had to go all day with no temperature or he would not be able to go to school on Tuesday. To which he said: "What if it is like an AB pattern?" Fever, No Fever, Fever, No Fever and so on and so on.. This just proves there is always a lesson in everything you do during the day. Thanks to all of his amazing teachers!

I surprised my hubby with a weekend getaway for our 10 year wedding anniversary last weekend. My mom found a little cottage in Northern Indiana on Craigslist and it was a much better deal than anything I could find. We always told ourselves that we would go on a cruise to celebrate this monumental event but due to the economy we had decided to not do this. So I settled for this! It was excatly what we needed. It was peaceful and quiet and not a lot to do but that is exactly how we needed it. I was concerned on if Bret would be able to do this because he is a mover and a shaker all the time and I am more of the laid back sleep in type of person. He did quite well to be honest!
On Saturday morning we went out on the front porch and played a game of scrabble. On top of realizing we are both not very smart and can't spell pass a 3-4 letter word... I got to see that my husband does know how to spell the word "deaf". Most of us women know that we do the majority of whatever it takes to make our kiddos excel and so needless to say I was quite astounded to see him spell it.
What a great weekend and here is to at least 10 years more!!
